About this documentary film
With five years dedicated work, CCTV has made the first full length documentary film about this building.  It is told through the eyes of a monk who entered the Potala at the age of 13 and lived there for 60 years, experiencing personally the rise and fall of its fortunes during this long period.

About The Potala Palace
In 1994, it was declared a United Nations World Cultural Heritage site.

The Potala Palace, a world-known place with age-old history and legendry was said to be built in the 7th century during the reign of King Songtsan Gambo and was rebuilt in 17th century by Dalai Lama V.  Having been reconstructed and restored many times, the Potala emerges as a building with great magnificence and splendor and has great significance in Tibetan history.

Located at the center of Lhasa, capital of Tibet, and at an elevation of 12,139 feet (3,700 meters), this 13-story, 1,000-room colossal and majestic architectural marvel is the world's highest and largest castle palace.  The structure is composed of the White Palace and the Red Palace. The former was the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas which also housed the former Tibetan government; the latter lodges primarily the tombs of the Dalai Lamas and various kinds of Buddhist shrines.  With its numerous murals, paintings, Buddhist statues and scripts, the Potala Palace is also the most comprehensive art and religious treasure house of Tibet.
